Commercial Banking provides financial solutions to businesses with annual sales generally in excess of $5 million. Our business lines are Wells Fargo Commercial Capital, Middle Market Banking, and Treasury Management & Payment Solutions.

The Control team is responsible for partnering with their relevant business group to develop and maintain a strong control environment leading to the early identification and sustainable mitigation of operational risk. The team focuses on five areas: Risk Identification & Assessment, Control Design & Evaluation, Issues & Control Deficiencies, Control Governance & Reporting, and Control Programs.

Provides consultation, expertise and strategic direction in the control design to effectively mitigate risks. Ensures the effective implementation and ongoing maintenance of the business control environment through execution of the Risk and Control Self-Assessment (RCSA) program. Gathers and analyzes data to understand and diagnose issues; designs appropriate reporting and metrics to inform and monitor the health of the operational risk and control environment. Leads and influences the design and implementation of business controls programs and complex initiatives generally spanning multiple business lines.  Consults with business groups to assess the issues and assist with the development of corrective action plans. Builds and maintains partnerships with the business, Corporate Risk, Audit, Legal, and regulators.

Partner with business owners to develop content for risk required reporting through:

  • Leading change management initiatives with senior leaders across the lines of business to evaluate the needs for operational risk reporting
  • Evaluate disparate risk reporting across all risk types
  • Propose aggregated reporting (bottoms up) to opine on the control environment
  • Evaluate disparate data to identify emerging risks, escalate as appropriate
  • Evaluate and challenge control environment
  • Build detailed business requirements documents for technology build of dashboards/recurring reporting

Develop meaningful metrics with business leadership that clearly define operating thresholds, drives transparency of performance and accountability and ownership for outcomes through:

  • Specialized analysis of existing control frameworks taking into account proposed changes to improve risk management effectiveness
  • Partner and challenge senior leaders across the lines of business to identify existing metrics to manage the business that are tied to business processes 
  • Analyze financial information, including confidential information, to challenge control limits and operating thresholds. Evaluate sufficiency of controls within the RCSA framework and the relationship to operating effectiveness
  • Build detailed business requirements documents for technology build of dashboards/recurring reporting

There is emphasis on proactive monitoring, governance, risk identification and escalation, as well as making sound risk decisions commensurate with the business unit’s risk appetite and all risk and compliance program requirements. 

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in risk management or 10+ years of financial services industry experience, of which 7+ years must include direct experience in risk management

Other Desired Qualifications

  • Expert at identifying and evaluating risk exposures and the associated controls (inclusive of control design) within all business lines of the Commercial Bank.
  • Experience garnerd over 10+ years across multiple business cycles, financial and non-financial
  • Master communicator, verbal and non-verbal, with all levels of he organization. Ability to maneuver through a highly complex and matrixed organization
  • Trusted partner, based on knowledge base, across all business lines of the Commercial Bank
  • Expert knowledge over the WFC Risk Management Framework and the associated policies, specifically the enterprise risk programs
  • Industry and subject matter expert with risk management functional knowledge
  • Develops and implements risk monitoring and risk reporting processes and controls
  • Leads implementation of complex initiatives with high risk across all business lines of the Commercial Bank
  • Potential certifications: CPA/CIA/CRMA/PM
  • Expertise providing consultation and strategic direction in control design to effectively mitigate risks
  • Experience in the execution and maintenance of the Risk and Control Self-Assessment (RCSA) program
  • Experience gathering and analyzing data and leveraging reporting/metrics to monitor the control environment
  • Experience leading the design and implementation of business control programs spanning multiple business lines
  • Experience developing and implementing corrective action plans in the control environment
  • Able to build and maintain partnerships with corporate business partners and regulators
