Learn more about this agency ResponsibilitiesArea Information: Big Bend National Park encompasses 801,000 acres of Chihuahuan Desert with varied scenery and diversity of plant and animal life.

The park community consists of about 250 people, including employees of the NPS, Concession, Border Patrol, Postal Service, School, and their families.

A state-accredited elementary school (K-8) is located at Panther Junction.

The park has a post office, gas stations, camper stores, restaurant, and lodge.

Recreational opportunities include hiking, bird watching, photography, backcountry camping, bicycling, and river rafting.

An active employee/community association sponsors social events throughout the year.

Customs Port of Entry provides access to visit Boquillas, Mexico across from Rio Grande Village.

A passport is required to visit Boquillas, Mexico and to return through the Boquillas Port of Entry.

Elevation at Panther Junction is 3,800 feet.

The climate is generally pleasant with hot summers (90-110 degrees F.) and mild winters (30-60 degrees F.) Terlingua (a small town 24 miles away) has a state-accredited high school (no bus service), lodging, restaurants, small grocery and hardware store, churches, and a bank.

Lajitas (47 miles away) has limited shopping, a medical clinic, lodging, restaurants, golf course, and churches.

Alpine, Texas (100 miles away) has most necessities, including supermarkets, stores, a hospital, pharmacies, churches, and a college university.

The nearest larger cities are Midland/Odessa (220-225 miles away) and El Paso (325 miles).

Major duties include but are not limited to:Installation, modification, repair, direct support, troubleshooting, general support maintenance and preventive maintenance, testing of complex electrical systems, circuits, equipment, appliances, controls, components, lighting fixtures, motor controls, generators, pumps, photovoltaics, and fire alarm systems.Installs, maintains and repairs a wide variety of electrical fixtures, tools, wiring systems, distribution panels and appliances.Testing of circuits and equipmentPerforms electrical repairsMaintains, diagnoses, and troubleshoots systems or equipment and repairsPerform weekly checks on emergency generators.Reads, interprets and works from work orders, building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings and electrical maintenance and repair manuals.This position requires knowledge and application of materials, safety and security regulations, OSHA, NEC, UMC, NFPAC, practices and procedures.Incumbent must be able to maintain, repair and use a variety of hand tools, testing equipment and power equipment characteristic of the electrical trade.Travel Required Occasional travel

Additional informationPhysical Demands: The incumbent makes installations from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms where frequently parts of the systems are in cramped places.

This requires standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and cramped positions.

Frequently lifts and carries up to 50 pounds arid occasionally over 50 pounds.

This work includes, but is not limited to installing or replacing: deep cycle batteries for solar systems; generators in remote areas using hoists and bars; boiler components in basements; motors and fan coil components in lofts and attics and aerators and other large equipment from sewage treatment ponds and facilities.

The incumbent will be required to work in cramped areas such as attics, crawl spaces and ventilation shafts which require crawling to install, troubleshoot or repair electrical components.

The may be exposed to electrical shock, spark and arc hazard and health hazards in sewer treatment plants.Working Conditions: The incumbent works outside in all types of weather; often works inside in dusty, dirty arid occasionally greasy locations where there is a possibility of cuts and bruises.The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection.
