Houston, TX 77032 Workdays & Hours: MONDAY – FRIDAY 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM*** ***Subject to ChangeDESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSResponsible for managing, administering, and documenting technical direction in the installation, maintenance and repair of City communications systems, including P25 mobile and base-station radio systems, microwave systems, and data communications.

Supervising the activities of a group of radio telecommunications technicians in one or more technical areas.

Prepare, review and updates design and construction specifications for radio communications systems.

Documents and reports status of projects and team functions.

Develops and documents weekly goals and results for each team member consistent with the goals of the department.

Responsible for performance appraisal for positions under their direction.

Ensures work orders, procedures, and documentation are timely and professional.

Inspects radio facilities under construction to ensure compliance with approved specification.

Other systems supported are HVAC, Generator, Automatic transfer switches.

Reports to the Assistant Director of Public Safety Communications.WORKING CONDITIONSThis position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc.

There are no major sources of discomfort in a normal office environment.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEDUCATION REQUIREMENTSRequires a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management and Information Systems (MIS) or a closely related field.Information systems-specific technical certifications may be substituted for 1 year of either the education or the experience requirement, as applicable.Related professional Information Systems experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSAt least six (6) years of technology experience supporting IT infrastructure including networks, security, and hardware.System-specific technical certifications will often be required.

System specific technical certifications may be considered for substitution for 1 year of experience.A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Management and Information Systems (MIS) or a closely related field may be substituted for two years of the experience requirement.LICENSE REQUIREMENTS NonePREFERENCES**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**+ Preference will be given to applicants with working knowledge of Public Safety Communications radio operations utilizing a Motorola P25 trunked-radio-system or knowledge in a complex networking environment or cellular role.+ Two years of supervisory experience is preferred.+ Preferences will also be given to individuals who prove completion of technical training courses consistent with Radio, Networking, or Cellular operations.GENERAL INFORMATIONSELECTION / SKILLS TESTS REQUIREDDepartment may administer skills assessment testSAFETY IMPACT POSITION YESIf yes, this position is subject to random drug testing and if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.SALARY INFORMATIONFactors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate’s qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
