Opto-Mechanical Engineer


This is a Full-time position in Austin, TX posted August 30, 2021.

Be part of a team that applies its expertise and knowledge to mechanical projects, finding innovative, cost-effective means to improve techniques, procedures, and products and technologies.

You will design products to meet customer needs, product quality, manufacturability, new product development, prototype builds, testing, and may serve a project manager role for smaller development projects.

You will develop the product designs necessary to drive product improvement and will be integral in securing present and future business by consistently meeting or exceeding Voice of Customer requirements.

We are looking for an exceptional optical mechanical engineer to develop and optimize hyperspectral thermal imaging systems for commercial application in the gas detection industry.

You will be working with a team of mechanical, hardware, software, and AI engineers to develop a product that meets customer needs.

Key Responsibilities:
· CAD based modeling, stress modeling and analysis, and material selection
· Design and tolerance opto-mechanical components and assemblies to meet optical model outputs
· Design electro-optics systems packaging & integration
· Design to meet regulatory standards (CE, IECEx, UL, etc).

Support third party certifying body testing
· Develop opto-mechanical designs and processes for reliability and manufacturability
· Prototype opto-mechanical designs and integrate into system design.

Perform design verification and testing
· Ability to generate required documentation including detailed drawings, design reports, assembly procedures, bills-of-material, test procedures, etc.

· Bachelors Degree in Physics or Engineering
· 5 years of experience with the use of CAD tools (ie SolidWorks, Creo)
· 2 years of experience and good understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (ASME Y14.5-2009)
· 5 years of experience designing optical imaging systems for a commercial application/commercialized product (ie optomechanical components, optomechanical sub-assemblies, electro-optical systems)
· 2 years of experience with new product introduction (NPI) including concept and specification development, prototyping, analysis and validation, and transfer to manufacturing WE VALUE
· Masters or Ph.D.

degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Optical Engineering, or equivalent
· Familiarity with micro-lens array design and manufacturing highly preferred
· Recent (within the past 4 years) demonstrated expertise in the following: thermal imaging system design, hyperspectral imaging design and analysis, IR optics (including sensors and coatings), and blackbody emission sources highly preferred
· Experience with optical design and modeling software (Zemax, CodeV, etc)
· Comfortable working in a Linux (Ubuntu) operating system
· Competency in Matlab, C++, or Python
· Familiarity of thermal imaging applications and gas detector industry is a plus
· Experience developing and documenting optical system validation and reliability test plans; Experience writing and presenting test and analysis results for broad audience
· Enthusiasm for learning about new technologies and engaging difficult technical problems
· Ability to work cross-functionally and manage both customer and stakeholder requirements.

· Excellent written and communication skills
· Experience working in an ISO compliant QMS
· Experience with new product introduction (NPI) including concept and specification development, prototyping, analysis and validation, and transfer to manufacturing
· Experience with root cause analysis (RCA) and implementing corrective and preventative actions (CAPA)
· Experience with thermal/structural modeling and simulations (FEA, ANSYS)
