Clinical Assistant Professor Faculty Opportunity Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Internal Medicine University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) Galveston, Texas

UTMB was established in 1891 as the first academic health center in Texas and is a component of the University of Texas System. Today UTMB includes four schools (medicine, nursing, health professions and graduate biomedical sciences), a network of hospitals and clinics that provide a full range of primary and specialized medical care, and numerous research facilities. 

The Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Internal Medicine at UTMB – is the primary academic home of 21 faculty members. Half are clinician-educators or clinician-investigators, half are Ph.D. scientists, and nearly half are women. The Division clinical training program included 3 first-year fellows, 3 second-year fellows, and two optional 3rd year positions – one in Global Infectious Diseases research and one in Antimicrobial Stewardship. The Division has an outstanding record of scholarly productivity that includes clinical and basic research focused on global infectious diseases, tropical medicine, and host defense. The UTMB Health System includes 5 hospitals (approximately 750 beds), 80 clinics and more than 12,000 employees and 1,000 credentialed providers.  

Clinical Assistant Professor – Physician Educator Position – interested candidates must have demonstrated expertise in the management of patients with complex infectious diseases. The successful candidate will be expected to establish themselves  as an academic ID physician-educator and develop scholarly area(s) of interest and productivity. Formal mentorship will be provided to promote professional growth and success as an academic physician. The successful candidate is expected to have a high level of personal and professional integrity and have an approach that is collegial and collaborative within a diverse work environment.

  • Clinical responsibilities will include participation as faculty attending on the infectious disease inpatient consult service, HIV-medicine inpatient service, and transplant ID service, provide weekend coverage at the level of other ID clinical faculty (typically 8-10 weekends per year), and one half-day outpatient clinic per week.  
  • Educational responsibilities will include hands-on supervision and teaching of students, residents, and fellows in inpatient and outpatient settings and providing didactic teaching at Division and Departmental conferences.
  • General responsibilities will include participation in Departmental, Divisional, and Institutional meetings, completing annual institutional training requirements, and other routine administrative requirements as requested by the ID Division Director.

Candidate Requirements: 

  • D., D.O., or equivalent degree.
  • Subspecialty training and Board Certification/Eligibility in Adult Infectious Diseases.
  • The ability to obtain an unrestricted state of Texas Medical License.
