Job Summary and Qualifications

As an Infection Control Registered Nurse (RN), you will support the hospital-wide infection prevention program and assesses compliance with standards to reduce the risks of nosocomial infections to patients, employees, Medical Staff, contract service workers, volunteers, students and visitors. Under APIC standards it is unnecessary to have Age Specific Competency assessed for the Infection Preventionist.

Participates in providing patient specific care standards as directed, and follows service excellence standards to ensure high levels of patient satisfaction.

  • Surveillance and Response:
  • Designs, conducts and evaluates surveillance systems for both community acquired and hospital acquired infections.
  • Participates in epidemiological investigations and processes audits, research and other special projects as related to infection prevention.
  • Interacts as needed with the Employee Health Nurse related to employee issues.
  • Participates in response planning and teams as indicated (Bio-terrorism, outbreaks, etc).
  • Data Collection and Reporting:
  • Communicates and/or prepares reports to departments, medical staff, and administration, relative to infection control, as necessary and as requested.
  • Collects, manages and reports the data on communicable diseases, as required by the Texas Department of Health.
  • Monitors compliance with State and Local regulations, OSHA and JCAHO standards and CDC recommendations and communicates or reports as necessary.
  • Reports regularly and as needed to the Infection Prevention Committee.
  • Policies and Procedures:
  • Collaborates system-wide with disciplines and departments to develop and update area-specific and hospital-specific policies and procedures pertinent to infection control principles which comply with various regulatory body rules, regulations, recommendations and updates.
  • Assists with creating and revising Infection Prevention Policies.
  • Assists the interdisciplinary team in formulating a plan of care including expected outcomes for patients as needed.
  • Employee?s conduct must reflect the Company?s values and a commitment to the Code of Conduct ethics and compliance program.

       EDUCATION REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED:

      • Required: Graduate of accredited applicable school or [if RN] enrolled in an Alternate Entry MSN program or higher level education.

          LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

            • Required: Texas RN License or a Compact RN license from a NCLA Compact State;
            • Preferred: Minimum of 2 years clinical experience in the acute care setting, working knowledge of Joint Commission Infection Prevention standards, CDC, and/or APIC Initiatives. Certification by the Board of Infection Control (CBIC) in Infection Control and Epidemiology ; BLS certification as per SDH policy
