David’s Medical Center!Job Summary and QualificationsJOB SUMMARY(Primary purpose of the position.)Under the indirect supervision of the supervisor and according to unit and hospital policies and procedures, the staff nurse is responsible for the admission and preoperative assessment and preparation of patients admitted on the day of the scheduled surgery procedure.

The staff nurse is also responsible for post-operative care and discharge of outpatients.

The nurse plans, implements, evaluates, and documents nursing care for assigned patients.

Assists with any other activities of the unit.GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES(The essential responsibilities and accountabilities of this position including interactions with other departments and outside vendors, if applicable, in PRIORITY order.)1.Assesses, plans, and evaluates pre-op and post-op patient care.

Age appropriate assessment is completed on each patient.

A plan of care is implemented and documented according to policy and procedure.

Obtains supplies, equipment and medications needed for patient care Recognizes and reports variations to appropriate individual as they occur.2.Provides age appropriate direct patient care.

Preoperatively and postoperatively prepare and monitors patients for surgery and procedure.

Performs correct pre-surgical preps.

Administers medication and IV therapy correctly and safely.

Accurately and legibly documents and reports patient care.

Receives and initiates physician orders.

Consistently demonstrates efficiency and speed with patient turnover.

Insures all patients have met discharge criteria according to policy/procedure.

Provides pre-op and post-op patient teaching and emotional support.

Completes patient follow-up phone calls to patients post procedure to evaluate patient care.3.Participates in monitoring and controlling environment of the perioperative area.

Identifies individual responsibilities in maintaining unit operations.

Participates in narcotic count and medication control.

Communicate effectively with patients, co-workers, physicians, and other health care workers.

Cross trains within perioperative area to assist or relieve routine department staff.

Demonstrates ability to use equipment safely and properly.

Participates in unit activitiesa.Maintains current professional growth through independent study and continuing education programsb.Completes RN unit specific Patient Care competency skills checklist.c.Participates in budget and inventory control.d.Keeps supervisor and/or buyer informed of needed items.e.Participates in staff and self-development.f.Takes appropriate action to prevent/manage accidents in the area.g.Participates in performance/process improvement.h.Assists with orientation of new employees.i.Completes Annual Equipment Competency Checklist.j.Attends 80% of Staff Meetings.k.Attends 90% of Mandatory Education Meetings and In-services, if applicable.l.Performs other duties as delegated.EXPERIENCE REQUIREDOne year experience as a staff RN on a med/surg unit, post anesthesia care unit, and/or surgery or same day surgery experience.EDUCATION REQUIREDAssociate’s Degree Major: NursingAlternate Entry MSN ProgramEducation Preferred: Completion of or actively pursuing a BSNLICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONSRequired:1.Registered Nurse license in Texas.

If Compact License, Texas license must be obtained within 90 days of hireRequired Upon Hire (for certifications only: upon hire is defined as within 2 business days of start date)2.Current BLS for Healthcare Providers with American Heart AssociationRequired Upon Hire (for certifications only: upon hire is defined as within 2 business days of start date)Preferred: CAPA, CPAN, ACLS, PALSSt.
