Pharmacy TechnicianPURPOSE OF POSITION:Under the direction of the Director of Pharmacy and/or Staff Pharmacists, the Pharmacy Technician or Trainee is responsible for general distribution activities, including but not limited to, computer order entry, medication order fill, preparation of intravenous admixtures, parenteral nutrition, floor stock and Omnicell filling, medication rounds and drug ordering and procurement activities, or other duties as assigned.

A person may be designated as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee for no more than one year and the requirements for registration as a pharmacy technician must be completed within the one year period.EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: (Includes knowledge, skills and abilities):Education: .Pharmacy technicians or Trainees must be registered with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) prior to beginning work or training in the pharmacy.Experience:A minimum of one year hospital pharmacy experience required.Does this position manage other: NoDoes this position provide direct care to patients: NoRESPONSIBILITIES:General DutiesReplaces medication used (floor stock) in all patient care areas in a timely and accurate manner.Replaces emergency & non-emergency medication trays with appropriate documentation.Replaces medication with no expired medication.

Security lock for emergency crash carts provided immediately upon request.Processes STAT/NOW medication orders completely in a timely manner.Performs or assists in distribution; must be checked by registered pharmacist before leaving pharmacy.

Promotes safe medication dispensing.Repackages bulk drugs in unit dose packages and maintains proper documentation in repackaging records.Performs monthly medication and pharmacy unit inspection as scheduled.Prepares IV admixtures using correct aseptic technique with correct labeling and mixing of IV batch.Accurately records refrigerator temperatures and makes adjustments if appropriate.Accurately charges & credits patient bills.

Able to accurately complete cart exchanges including crediting patients.Reconciles overrides and narcotic discrepancies.Participates in special projects and additional duties as required.Accurately restocks Omnicell.Performs general housekeeping duties in the pharmacy that includes counter cleaning, shelf dusting, cleaning all refrigerators, and keeping all work areas clean.Answers telephone and takes appropriate action (transfers, page, takes message, fulfills requests).Performs billing procedures as required.Files patient records and other paperwork as required.Responsible for implementing and following all Pharmacy DNV standards.Standards for Customer ServiceTreats customers as the most important part of job.Listens to customer without interruption.Takes actions to appropriately and successfully address customer issues; effectively communicates with customers.Demonstrates respect for diverse cultures of all patients, families and co-workers.Standards for SafetyFollows safety guidelines in safety manual.Knows RACE procedures, location of closest fire extinguisher.Reports potential safety issues to management.Attends all required safety education programs.Provides complete and accurate response to safety questions.Standards of EmploymentAttire is professional, neat, clean and appropriate for work performed and wears proper identification while on duty.Maintains confidentiality of hospital and patient information at all times.Employee has completed the required Annual Mandatory Education within the past twelve (12) months.Consistently follows Attendance PolicyStandards of Quality Improvement/InnovationIdentifies and challenges work processes.Works toward continuous improvement based on customer needs.Contributes new ideas, makes helpful suggestions for change.Works effectively as a part of the team, participates and supports group efforts.PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES:Must be able to see with corrective eye wearMust be able to hear clearly with assistanceAble to handle emergency or crisis situations.May be occasionally subject to irregular hours.May be required to wear protective equipment as necessary.
