With nearly 7,500 employees and over 1,000 licensed in-patient beds, UT Health East Texas provides healthcare services to thousands of patients annually through our hospitals, clinics, Level 1 trauma facility, air emergency fleet and EMS service in a metropolitan service area of a quarter-million people.

The RN Flight Nurse administers emergent and critical care to a patient population which ranges from neonates to geriatrics utilizing the nursing process.

Works cooperatively and interdependently with emergency, prehospital, law enforcement, and ancillary personnel while coordinating the emergent and critical care of patients requiring helicopter transportation.

Markets the Air 1 Program and serves as a representative of the department, as well as the UT HEALTH EAST TEXAS, when involved with a public relations activity and/or marketing activity.

Adheres to all hospital policies and procedures.DUTIES, ACCOUNTABILITIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Assesses patient needs in prehospital and hospital settings utilizing accepted nursing and paramedic standards.

Sets priorities of care rapidly and accurately under all conditions and in varied environments, whether inside a hospital or in the field.

Functions in the field without direct supervision utilizing assessment skills and Air 1 written protocols when physician contact is not possible and accepts responsibility for such actions.Maintains and is proficient in the use of all supplies and equipment used for patient care on the helicopter, including communication and navigation equipment.

Additionally, is proficient in the use of common supplies and equipment found in ambulances, emergency department, and critical care units.Participates in public/community relations and education assignments which may include speaking to groups.Participates in departmental CQI and educational activities, including attendance at Air 1 staff meetings.Some supervision of clinical support personnel is required; however, there are no management supervisory responsibilities Education:High school diploma or equivalent required.Degree in nursing from an accredited school of professional nursing.Experience:At least three years critical care nursing experience.

Critical care experience is defined as no less than 4000 hrs in an ICU or emergency department.Previous flight nursing experience is preferredThe ability to operate critical care equipment (i.E., monitors, pumps, ventilators)Must possess standard critical care skills commensurate with the flight nursing profession.Must become proficient in the operation of VHF and 800 System radio equipment.Must become proficient in the use of the Global Positioning System.The ability to make major and critical decisions in the absence of medical and/or supervisory direction.Basic personal computer skills and comfort with Microsoft Windows operating system; database and word processing skills requiredStrong verbal and written communication skillsActive listening skillsGood problem solving skillsAbility to manage stress appropriately and to make decisions under pressure.Strong time management skillsDemonstrates good team workCertification and Licensure:Texas RN license required.Texas EMT-B certification required and EMT-P certification within one year.Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) required.Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required.Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN) required.NRP requiredAdvanced certification (CFRN) required or within 6 months of employment.

Lifts, positions, pushes, and transfers patients; having the ability to life/carry up to 60 kg at times.

This may be comprised of patients and/or equipment.Must possess digital dexterity.Must possess and maintain extremely keen sense of touch, smell, and hearing.Must possess and maintain extremely keen sense of sight, including the ability to see clearly for long distances as well as in close proximity.Must have the ability to equalize pressure in both ears.Frequent exposure to extremes of heat and cold in all weather conditions.Sufficient noise to cause distraction and possible hearing loss if protection is not used.Works in extremes of height and constant motion.Frequent exposure to blood and body fluids.Subject to long, irregular hours; overtime and some call back required.Subject to varying and unpredictable situations.
