Principal Engineer, Software

The Principal Software Engineer plays a key role in shaping T-Mobile’s technology strategy by applying expertise in strategic software development and large-scale technology platforms service billions of requests.

We are looking for an experienced engineer with deep knowledge and experience regarding public clouds, analytics, and cost management. This job contains technical aspects, such as understanding T-Mobile’s technology stack, working closely with the platform engineering team and environment operations team to manage tagging of T-Mobile public cloud resources, outlining cloud strategy, analyzing cloud billing data using data analysis tools. This role will enable tracking real time consumption & costs, drive cost optimization, and develop understanding of our unit economics.

In T-Mobile’s Cloud team, we work cross-functionally to understand the linkage between T-Mobile’s business goals, business architectures, and technology architectures. The Principal Cloud Software Engineer drives the evolution of infrastructure, processes, products, and services.

    Public (AWS, Azure, GCP) analysis of actuals to budget / forecast, analyze key areas of waste and optimization, utilization rates, etc.

    Extract and analyze large scale data within cloud billing and usage, to support management and financial partners in decision making

    Execute opportunities for price optimizations initiatives with public cloud vendors including long term reservation contracts, volume discounts, and private pricing

    Identification, implementation, and maintenance of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

    Write high-quality code and mentor others to do the same

    Lead the development efforts for cloud-based applications and infrastructure

    Create development standards/guidelines for app teams, help them follow the DevOps model

    Translate business and functional requirements into documented technical specifications

    Develop support documentation for acceptance of systems changes into production

    Participate in code reviews and walkthroughs of technical specifications with other members of the technical team

    Communicate design, requirements, functionality and limitations of systems/applications

    Utilize departmental agile software development methodologies as a guide for development activities

    Meet project schedules by providing accurate estimates of effort required for development deliverables. Communicate updates on project progress to development and project management. Escalate issues which may affect project success to management

    Maintain technical skills and expertise through continuing education and training

    Collaborate with other teams including Business, Enterprise Testing, Release Management, Project Management and Application Support for successful delivery of systems enhancements


    You are self-driven, work well in a team, have great communication skills

    Specialized expertise in public clouds (AWS, Azure or GCP at scale) and how to understand and optimize costs with a FinOps or cloud financial management lens

    Strong understanding of technical engineering concepts of Applications infrastructure requirements, understanding of cloud requirements for engineering capacity, ability to partner cross-organizationally and drive cost optimization discussions, attention to detail, innovative thought leader to develop cost optimization strategies

    Experience in developing and implementing code-based automation to simplify processes in public cloud environments

    Practical experience writing code using cloud provider APIs

    Have skills to extract and analyze complex datasets using well optimized SQL queries and define / implement dashboards and reports

    BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent industry experience

    7+ years of software development experience

    Experience in cloud cost optimization

    Prior experience with KPI modeling as well as an understanding of cloud costing models, forecasting, etc.

    Attitude and aptitude for continually learning new things

    Experience with AWS and/or Azure cloud technologies, big data, data analytics

    Expert knowledge of design principles and best practices

    Experience with UI frameworks and technologies (Angular, D3, React)

    Expert in at least two of the following domains: Kubernetes, public cloud (AWS/Azure), server-side web dev, client-side web dev, REST/web services, MS SQL / NoSQL database, Spark / Databricks

    Highly competent in at least two of languages including but not limited to: Go, Python, C#, JavaScript, GraphQL, SQL
