Senior User Experience Design Lead – IBM Research

IntroductionIBMs Apps@Research team is seeking a talented user experience designer and leader to join our team in providing IBM Researchers with a great User Experience for our internal solutions. We drive excellence by successfully merging business and user goals, delivering intuitive user interfaces that increase adoption. This drives innovation, collaboration, business impact and scientific eminence at IBM Research. Our applications are instrumental to driving the Research business transformation: to be the organic growth engine for the IBM company. In this role you will be the lead UX designer in reimagining one or more existing applications. Additionally, you will also serve as a senior leader among other UX designers ensuring high quality, consistency, and overall integrated experience across our suite of applications. You will work with product owners, iteration managers, engineers, global leadership stakeholders, and other designers to determine the best solutions for user satisfaction and to address business needs. Attention to detail and a strong portfolio in UX, Visual Design, content writing, and User Research required along with experience as a UX design leader. The ability to quickly produce design assets is critical we work iteratively to continuously deliver value to our community on the way from MVP to wow. Work with stakeholders, Product Owner, and others independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team to define requirements and develop the solution and an iterative design planPerform user research (interviews, surveys, etc), observation of user tasks and draw insights from product usage data, integrating these findings with business requirements to transform the users mental model into the user interfaceLeverage scenarios and user flows in the creation of workflows, flowcharts, storymapping and prototypesParticipate in and lead UX activities (in person and remote) such as user/design research, interviews and workshops, observation of user tasks, design thinking activities, and draw insights from product usage data. You will integrate these findings with business requirements to transform the users mental model into the user interface.Develop user profiles, usability requirements, use cases and multiple scenarios to articulate the solution experienceTranslate findings into usable, useful, effective and efficient user experiencesClearly and quickly deliver ideas to cross-functional teamsProvide information verbally and visually through low- and mid-fidelity renderings and clickable prototypesTest and validate working hypotheses through usability testing of wireframes, prototypes and published product, and participate in design critiqueApply UX methods to independently produce clear and compelling content, with evidence of strong writing and planning of information architecture.Ensure that the look and feel of the products designed adhere to style standards on typography, visual hierarchy, and other main graphic design principles. Iteratively prototype designs using the research insights and user feedback you collect and synthesize, as well as technical and strategic input from the project team.Quickly answer questions from engineers during development phase and perform acceptance testing ahead of deploymentPost-launch, help evaluate success and iteration planWhen re-imagining legacy apps, fully immerse yourself in understanding the existing and to-be state of the entire app As a Senior UX Design Leader, you will:Be an advocate for Design, User Experience, and Agile.Cultivate a healthy, collaborative, and supportive team cultureBuild and manage the infrastructure that can sustain production of high-quality work and scale design design system and standards, design iteration managementYou will be an essential leader in our move from siloed / legacy applications to an integrated suite of essential apps with a common design language. You will work with our designers and engineers on how to best execute consistently across multiple apps / teams. We use the Carbon design system, as well as legacy design systems.Collaborate every day with developers and product owners essential for success in this role. You will be systematic in hand off and continued interface from designs vision through developments execution and operation.Developing, improving, and scaling design practices and processes as well as content developmentMust balance design operations with speed of design delivery. It is critical that you be a champion for agile approach.Engage the design community to drive adoption of design practices, resources, trends, and patternsStaying relevant to emerging trends in areas related to contemporary web design and UI/UX strategiesWho you areCreative, curious, questioning, open to receiving and providing critique, and have a ton of initiative.Able to focus on design detail and ascertain user value and impact as part of your software experience. You possess experience solving complex design problems for Web interactions or software solutions and are capable of translating research findings into complex interaction designs that provide usable, effective and efficient experiences to users. Your keen written and verbal communication skills include the ability to articulate alternative approaches. The ideal candidate has the demonstrated the ability to Understand mental models and build wireframes and prototypes in accordance with interaction design principlesApply knowledge about UX disciplines including information architecture and micro-interactionsTell meaningful stories about users, with great presentation skillsDisplay teamwork, professionalism, persuasive interpersonal communications skills, and design leadershipHave a start-up spirit – feel comfortable to wear multiple hats and make decisions, self-motivated and organized, tenacious but flexibleStrong, clean visual design senseOpen to feedback and know how and when to defend design choicesMove with agility.
