Peraton provides management and technical support for NASA’s scientific balloon program which supports enabling science missions for NASA and universities across the United States and foreign scientific communities.

Scientific balloon missions provide researchers inexpensive, relatively quick, long duration access to near space altitudes and environments.

Balloon missions cost orders of magnitude less than satellite missions and provide platforms for heavy experiments (some greater than 5000 pounds) to operate for weeks and even months.

Balloon missions have assisted with significant scientific discoveries and data collection in the fields of cosmic rays, gamma ray and x-ray astronomy, optical and UV astronomy, atmospheric sciences, and cosmic microwave background studies.

Our staff are located at the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility (CSBF) in Palestine, TX where we design, analyze, build and assemble the support hardware and balloon gondola payloads for the missions.

We launch the balloons from locations within the United States (Texas, New Mexico, and Hawaii) and around the world including Antarctica, Sweden, New Zealand and Australia.

Our engineers and technician staff support the launches and balloon and payload recoveries in the US and many worldwide locations.

Peraton’s NASA Balloon Operations Contract (NBOC) program is seeking a Thermal Engineer to join our team in Palestine, Texas.

We are seeking a candidate to perform thermal analysis to evaluate designs of the balloon payloads and support hardware to ensure survival and successful operation during ascent and float at high altitude.

The successful mechanical thermal engineer is provided opportunities to analyze and evaluate the science payloads (experiments) to survive environmental conditions, as well as to support the design of thermal protections or enhancements.

Assignments will include:Performing thermal design and analysis of NBOC CSBF hardware to be flown in NASA high-altitude balloon missionsCoordinating with science teams and perform analysis to determine thermal effects on integrated balloon payloads to ensure NBOC CSBF components meet requirementsAssisting science teams by providing mission-specific thermal environmental parametersDevelop mechanical models/assemblies using provided CAD softwarePresenting thermal analysis results at customer meetingsVerifying thermal model recommendations are incorporated in integrated hardware by working with the integration teamValidating thermal models by back-correlating to historical flight dataBasic Qualifications:Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Chemical Engineering and 2 years of thermal analysis experienceThermal Desktop experience including:Conduction heat transfer modelingRadiation heat transfer modelingRadiation task development including Orbital modelingFamiliarity with Microsoft Office software, including Excel and PowerPointPreferred Qualifications:Familiarity with SolidWorksCAD software experienceExperience programming in Microsoft Excel Visual Basic (VBA)We are an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
