Leader, Valve Technologies


This is a Contract position in Irving, TX posted August 3, 2021.

Job Description:

This Leader, Valve Technologies is responsible for managing and leading all valve innovation initiatives across the Flow Control Division, FCD), including Isolation Valves (IV) and Automation and Control Valves (ACV). This cross-functional leader will lead focused teams of product engineers, specialists, and technicians across the world, and partners with external and internal co-innovators and subject matter experts. This position reports directly to the VP of Marketing, Technology and Engineering (MTE), and will also work closely with the FCD Director of IV Engineering, the FCD Director of ACV Engineering, the Enterprise Director of Technology Development, and the Enterprise VP of Global Engineering. 
The Leader must possess proven leadership capability and strong technical background with valves and actuation systems and their applications in a wide array of industries. This leader must have excellent communication skills to interface with multiple teams both internally and externally across the world – driving alignment with customers’ articulated and unarticulated needs, collaborating with Flowserve’s research partners, driving new standards in new growth areas, and providing leadership across cross-functional Flowserve’s associates. This role owns $5m – $15m R&D budget focused on technology and product development that innovates around new value propositions and new business models. Finally, this director is responsible to retain and attract industry recognized talent, support training and development of engineers, and work strategically and tactically to develop industry-top technical and innovation capabilities.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Partner with sales and marketing to set direction and strategy for the product groups within FCD.
  • Establish best practices for research and development activities as they exist around the core severe service categories.
  • Monitor key performance indicators and establish action plans to maintain or improve performance of NPD and DtV teams on a global scale.
  • Utilizes experience and knowledge of valve and actuator design and standards to manage the timely execution of product initiatives and timely support of sales, engineering and aftermarket services.
  • Oversee the development and training of engineers/specialists and technicians by fostering an open learning environment which results in building a team of SME’s around technology clusters.
  • Maintain and grow the global integration of the GTEC India team.  Build and grow the relationships with GTEC.
  • Develop strong internal and external customer support though technology focus and adopt the latest in new technology and research when applicable.
  • Partner with MRO Director of Engineering for root cause analysis of equipment failures and technical customer issues.
  • Provide for the development of engineering design standards and technical assistance within the valve technologies globally.
  • Continually develop and implement improvements within the team to improve operational performance aligned with corporate objectives and customer requirements. Improve working processes, procedures, and identify possible areas for standardization.
  • Ensure products are safe and compliant with appropriate industry requirements (e.g. FM, CSA, ATEX, PED, API, Machinery Directive, etc.).  Ensure proper due diligence in processes and documentation to support that compliance.
  • Technical leader for complex valve applications and complex, custom engineered valves. 
  • Support the capture and documentation of engineering/R&D best practices and know-how  – for both products and processes – to ensure that knowledge can be transferred effectively throughout the organization and that  other associates are able to benefit from the collective wisdom embodied within the technical community.
  • Create a team that can perform as lead contributors to the invention and/or design of products or services which include significant advancements in technology or innovative design concepts in order to advance the state of the art through the introduction of a product or service into a new area of application or achieving a major improvement in the functionality, reliability and/or quality of the products or service as evidenced by a receipt of major and commercially meaningful patents.
  • Collaborate with Product Management to identify existing or anticipated technology gaps in our product or services portfolio and then act as lead investigator in researching new or alternative technologies to meet the defined needs in alignment with Flowserve market imperatives. 
  • Advance Flowserve’s technical standing in the marketplace.
  • Represent Flowserve’s technical and commercial interests as a key contributor to new or revised regulations, standards, and guidelines developed by industrial organizations and government or NGO regulatory bodies.  Provide consultation and training to help Product Management, R&D, and Engineering understand and proactively address the impact of these activities on Flowserve products.
  • Serve as a technical mentor and trainer to facilitate effective knowledge transfer in area of expertise to targeted technical staff in order to advance Flowserve’s technical capabilities and sustain our long-term competency in these areas.

    • E portfolio bigger than $10m annually
    • Understanding of control valves, engineering standards, ASME, ASTM, ISA & IEC, B 16.34, section 8 B&PV code, DCS, SIS, PAM, process control.
    • Must be self-starting and have motivational skills and a high sense of urgency to drive and execute production and development schedules.
    • Interpersonal skills are critical for optimum communication with internal and external customers including the Flowserve management team and employees.
    • Ability to produce professional engineering reports and presentations. They must also be able to deliver these presentations to management teams, industry committees, employees and customers.
    • Excellent time management and organization skills.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and must be fluent in English verbally as well as in written communication.  Other language skills are beneficial. 
    • Ability to travel domestically and globally approximately 30-40% of the time.
    • Proven experience in building and managing global new product development engineering teams and cross-functional followership more than 10 years. 
    • Product development with concurrent manufacturing and supply chain experience will be necessary.  Experience with engineering and manufacturing being located on different continents.  



    • Minimum 10 years’ experience leading product innovation teams to solving complex industry problems through new product and technology introductions.
    • Education: (4) Year engineering degree required.
    • Exceptional communication and relationship skills across all disciplines in the business & factories.
    • Experience with engineering modeling and design tools (ANSYS, SolidWorks, Windchill, CATIA, etc.)
    • Significant and broad engineering experience with valves with a focus on sizing and selecting all products including severe service, actuation, and instrumentation.
    • Significant expertise and experience in the development of custom engineering software analysis tools.
    • Practical expertise in advanced thermodynamics and solving valve applications involving multiphase flow.
    • Extensive experience with research, simulation and testing in the field of fluid dynamics including instrumentation and data reduction and interpretation.
    • Individual should be detail oriented, deadline driven, customer focused, a strategic thinker and problem solver.
    • Strong knowledge transfer and mentoring skills in group and individual situations.
    • Demonstrate a high degree of competency and dedication to educating both customers and the Flowserve engineering community on the development, deployment and application of the associated technologies and products or services.
    • Be recognized by peers within the industry, academia or government researchers and related professional societies as having extraordinary technical knowledge as evidenced by a significant volume of patents, publications and presentations in peer-reviewed symposiums, conferences and conference proceedings, and other industry recognized publications.
    • Demonstrate a high degree of competency and dedication to apply leading-edge processes and tools to all aspects of duties and responsibilities, including but not limited to Voice of the Customer, Value Analysis/Value Engineering, Design for Six Sigma, Requirements Management and Traceability, Risk Management, Failure Mode and Effect Analysis, and Project Management.
    • Possess strong organizational and interpersonal skills with the ability manage a cross functional team.
    • Excellent reputation, with the ability to influence change in a matrix management environment.
    • Experience in Oracle or SAP MRP systems.
    • Understand and implement the Continuous Improvement Process for projects and processes (CIP).
    • Demonstrate a high degree of competency and understanding of key structured development processes, including but not limited to Flowserve’s PDP, TDP, ECPI, and PoC policies, as well as generic DMAIC, DMADV, and other commonly implemented best practices.
    • Demonstrate a high degree of understanding of international methods and tools for protecting intellectual property, included but not limited to Patents, Trademarks, Trade Secrets, and Copyrights, as well as the ability to pro-actively apply them intelligently on an as-required basis.
    • English is required. German, Italian and other language skills are helpful
