This role reports to Research & Development (R&D) Senior Engineer and is located in Plano, Texas. As a Product Safety Engineer, you will be responsible for defined work on projects with moderate complexity and have the ability to resolve issues through immediate action or short-term planning. This role follows an individual work plan to support product safety design reviews and obtain international and domestic product safety agency approvals. The product types include various power conversion devices and systems (Direct Current (DC) to DC, Alternating Current (AC) to DC and DC to AC).

Your responsibilities

  • Perform basic and advanced testing techniques needed for product development activities in the Engineering Laboratory.
  • Analyze product safety designs to determine suitability and compliance.
  • Write and develop test plans for product safety evaluation.
  • Oversee various tests performed on products, record results and communicate any quality alerts as necessary.
  • Ensure that lab techs are performing the various tests properly.
  • Prepare and submit safety agency reports to obtain product compliance approval.
  • Assist in the general maintenance and upkeep in the lab by ensuring that the labs systems are ISO-17025 compliant.
  • Evaluate product changes and new product developments as required to maintain product safety compliance.
  • Recommend and develop improved testing processes and techniques.

Your background

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university or college with minimum 2 years of experience.
  • Ability to interpret analog and digital circuit schematics.
  • Safety Agency experience (UL, CSA, VDE, TUV).
  • Strong problem solving and math skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional matrix environment.
  • Six Sigma training.
  • Experience with test instrumentation (o-scope, power meter, electronic load, etc.).
  • Experience with Safety Agency approval processes.
  • Knowledge of power supply topologies.
  • Understanding of Safety Agency standards and specific test requirements with UL(IEC)62368-1, UL Subject 1801, UL 1778, IEC 61204-7, and IEC62477-1.
  • Familiarity with ISO-17025 test protocol and requirements.
  • DSP Firmware college course or equivalent experience.
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US.
