Director, Programs & Advocacy

POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Director, Programs & Advocacy will have strategic and operational responsibility for a broad range of program areas.

The position will be a part of the senior management team that drives the overall strategy for the organization and represents Community Catalyst at the local, state, and national level.

With a staff of more than 25 team members, the Senior Director, Programs & Advocacy will be responsible for driving program integration, for building and implementing new strategic initiatives in line with Community Catalyst’s strategic plan, and for working closely with the Executive Director and other senior leaders within the organization to identify new opportunities to expand Community Catalyst’s reach and impact, including with respect to supporting the capacity and power-building efforts of CC’s local and state community-based partner organizations.

The Senior Director will also work closely with the Executive Director and Community Catalyst’s Development Director to ensure strong financial support for CC’s programmatic work.

In partnership with other senior team members, the Senior Director will be responsible for ensuring programmatic work is focused on centering health justice and race equity.

As a member of the senior management team, the Senior Director is expected to actively engage in the overall leadership of the organization, including by being acquainted with other areas of Community Catalyst’s work and operations and by engaging in cross-organizational strategic discussions.

SUPERVISION

The Senior Director of Programs and Advocacy is supervised by the Executive Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Team Management

● Lead and manage a range of distinct and high-performing programs within Community Catalyst.

● Provide oversight, guidance, and support to team leaders to ensure programs both meet their established goals and are positioned for growth in support of Community Catalyst’s mission.

● Ensure team operations are strong, including budget management, funder management, project management, and people management.

● Oversee support for staff leadership development, driving efforts to support staff at varying points in their careers.

● Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other senior leaders within the organization, with an emphasis on facilitating strong collaboration across programs and teams.

● Participate in organization-wide efforts to improve organizational management and health.

Strategic Leadership

● Spearhead the development of strategic connections among the full range of Community Catalyst’s programs, with an emphasis on centering CC’s programmatic goals in health justice and race equity, as well as positioning CC’s work for the future.

● Work to develop new opportunities for funding and program incubation, in line with Community Catalyst’s new strategic plan.

● Actively support team-wide efforts to develop new and strengthen existing relationships with local, state, and national organizations, with an emphasis on supporting –
– and learning from –
– partner efforts to engage community members in developing community-driven solutions.

● Develop and maintain relationships with funders and partners, with an emphasis on growing Community Catalyst’s network and opportunity to build new relationships.

● Oversee programmatic communications to a wide range of audiences, including partners, the Board, and funders.

● In partnership with the Senior Director of Operations and Management, drive programmatic implementation of Community Catalyst’s strategic plan.

● Work in close partnership with the Executive Director and other senior leaders within the organization in developing new areas of opportunity and growth, particularly with respect to supporting local and state partners in their power
– and capacity-building efforts.

● In partnership with team members and the Development Director, develop concept papers and participate in the development of funding proposals, reports, and other communications to donors.

● Represent the organization externally through conferences, meetings, and public events.

Advocacy

● In close partnership with the Director of Policy & Partnerships, ensure programmatic work fully informs and effectively advances organization-wide policy and advocacy goals.

That includes ensuring coordinated implementation of local, state, and federal policy goals.

● In partnership with the Communications team, identify opportunities to highlight the impact of Community Catalyst’s programs to a wide range of audiences.

● Work in partnership with the Executive Director to identify strategic direction for the Community Catalyst Action Fund.

(CCAF).

Equity

● Lead efforts to establish and implement racial justice goals for the team and to actively work to build a more inclusive team.

Contribute to organization-wide efforts to center racial justice in Community Catalyst’s work and to build a more inclusive organization.

● Perform other duties as necessary to achieve the goals of the department

  QUALIFICATIONS

● Significant leadership, program development, and management experience.

● Bachelors’ degree and 10+ years of related experience, or relevant work experience, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership position.

● A highly collaborative management style, with the ability to draw on and develop the expertise of people with diverse skill sets and experiences.

● Strong background in community-based organizing and advocacy, and experience launching and driving advocacy campaigns. 

● A strong understanding of power-building, and the critical importance of investing in it as a fundamental part of addressing inequity in health systems.

● Excellent communication and public speaking skills, with an ability to communicate complex topics to a range of audiences in a compelling way.

● Demonstrated ability to develop relationships with partners, funders, and other stakeholders.

● Experience with progressive organizations and advocacy.

● Experience with fundraising a plus.

 BENEFITS & SALARY

● Salary Range: $145,000
– $165,000
